Most fatalities that occur during a winter storm are not caused by the storm itself.

Most deaths are the result of traffic accidents on icy roads and over exposure due to extreme cold. 10,000 emergency room visits are attributed  to snow-shoveling injuries each year.

Stay Dry

  • Excess perspiration increases heat loss, so remove extra layers of clothing whenever you feel too warm.
  • Remember that wet clothing will also cause  the body to chill more rapidly.

Avoid Overexertion

  • Cold weather puts an extra strain on the heart. Be aware of any health conditions that could place  you at greater risk of injury or illness.

Avoid Falls

  • Wear the proper footgear.
  • Watch for icy surfaces on streets and sidewalks.
  • Take it slow.
  • Be Smart, Be Safe.
